Plants toxic to cats

10 Plants Toxic to Cats

Have you recently picked up the hobby of collecting plants? The pandemic may have turned many of our homes into a greenhouse however, it is important to note that some of those plants and flowers may be harmful and thus toxic to your cats.

Although the toxicity may vary between plants and amounts ingested, results can be devastating and fatal or even detrimental to your cat’s health in the long run.

You do not have to part ways with your new plants however, finding a new area where your cat cannot reach them is ideal (Which I know can be tough!). Here is a list of some common plants (indoors and outdoors) that are harmful to your cats:

1. Lilies (Lilium Sp.)

Lillies as gorgeous as they are, are known to be one of the most highly toxic plants to cats. Within the lily family, Asiatic lilies, tiger lilies, red lilies, Easter lilies, rubrum lilies, daylilies, lily of the valley, are some of the more dangerous lilies to cats. Your cat does not necessarily have to ingest the lily, sometimes just licking the pollen or drinking the water from the vase of lilies can cause acute kidney failure. If kidney failure is not treated right away, it can be fatal.

2. Autumn Crocus (Colchicum autumnale)

Also known as meadow saffron or naked lady, the alkaloid colchicine is the toxic principle which can affect cats. When ingested, GI upsets can be noted such as vomiting and bloody diarrhea. You may also notice some drooling, seizures, and shortness of breath. Internally, it can cause kidney and liver damage, sometimes even death if your cat isn’t treated right away. Symptoms may not appear right away however if you know your cat may have ingested this plant, it is important to seek medical attention right away.

3. Cyclamen (Cyclamen spp.)

Known for its heart-shaped petals and bright variations in colors, this Mediterranean plant is often kept indoors. The toxic component is saponins, which can cause drooling, vomiting, diarrhea. Seizures, and abnormal heart rate and rhythm, if ingested.

4. Peonies (Paeoniaceae)

Known for their large vibrant flowers, these spring bloom flowers are known to carry the toxin, paeonol which is concentrated in the bark. When ingested in large amounts, it can cause vomiting and diarrhea.

5. Oleander (Nerium oleander)

This plant is poisonous not only to cats but to us humans. Touching this plant can cause skin irritation and ingesting it can cause adverse reactions such as drooling, vomiting, incoordination, tremors, seizures, and heart abnormalities. The plant contains cardiac glycoside toxins which is the reason for heart abnormalities. All parts of this plant are toxic, even drinking the vase water can cause adverse reactions.

6. Tulips (Tulipa spp.)

These popular flowers usually found in gardens contain tulipalin A and tulipalin B, they are usually concentrated in the bulbs. Signs of tulip ingestion may include drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, depression, and tremors. Although ingesting tulips may not be fatal, if a cat is sick, or elderly, it can cause or add on additional health problems.

7. Dieffenbachia (Dieffenbachia spp.)

A tropical flowering plant and a common houseplant is generally not deadly however, the symptoms of intoxication can be very painful and uncomfortable. When ingested, the calcium oxalate crystals in the plant can cause a burning sensation in the mouth, difficulty swallowing, drooling and vomiting.

8. Castor Bean (Ricinus communis)

A native east African plant, known for its highly toxic protein, ricin, can cause symptoms such as abdominal pain, drooling, vomiting, excessive thirst, weakness, loss of appetite, and diarrhea.  If ingested in large amounts, it can cause severe reactions such as tremors, seizures, coma, dehydration, and even death. Castor bean can be poisonous to humans as well if ingested.

9. English Ivy (Hedera helix)

This low maintenance, evergreen plant is a popular decorative houseplant that has potential risks for toxicity in cats. If ingested, it can cause vomiting, abdominal pain, excessive salivation, and diarrhea.

10. Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea)

This gorgeous traditional garden plant, known for its trumpet shaped flowers are highly toxic to cats. It contains the toxins, cardiac glycoside, which affects the heart. If small amount is ingested, it can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. However, in severe cases, cardiac failure and death has been reported.

This list provided is only partial, the exhaustive list of toxic plants is listed below (provided by the ASPCA).

Wrapping it up

Although not all plants and flowers are deadly to your cats, it is important to make sure that the plants that you do have indoors and outdoors in your garden or lanai are secured, and in a place where your cats cannot reach. This is especially vital if you have kittens or younger cats, as they tend to be more curious. Symptoms of toxicity can vary from a rash, GI upsets, kidney/liver failures, and even death. If you realize that your cat may have ingested a certain plant/flower, it is recommended that you seek immediate veterinary attention. Also, we have an article with 7 foods that are toxic to cats – please, check it out!

If your cat seems to be really into plants, you can buy them a fresh patch of safe and quality cat grass that they can nibble on instead. Cat grass, a grass mixture made from seeds of oats, rye, wheat, or barley, is exceptional for environmental enrichment especially if your cat is strictly indoors. In addition, catnip, a perennial herb, is another option for enticement, which is proven to be safe if provided in small amounts.
