Can cats eat cheese?

🧀Can cats eat cheese?

Mass media made us believe that dairy products are the number one delicacy for cats.

It all started with “Cheese chasers” in 1951. The main characters of the cartoon were a cat and a mouse. They broke into a cheese factory and ate so much cheese that couldn’t even move.

Then “Tom & Jerry” and “Garfield” continued to persuade us that cheese is the favorite meal for our fluffies. However, film directors weren’t aware of the fact that a cat’s digestion system doesn’t have enough enzymes to stomach a cow’s milk and other dairies.

So is cheese a forbidden product or not? Let’s find out.

Is cheese bad for cats?

You need to remember that all cats are carnivores and they need a lot of protein in their daily diet. Dairy is not a necessary part of their meal. However, cheese has a high-fat content. It is also very delicious. That’s why cats love it. Let’s say, dairy is their guilty pleasure. It’s the same as if a child asked for some sweets. It is okay to give some, but big amounts can cause serious problems.

Cats are lactose intolerant. Their digestion system can’t handle a lot of milk. As it was mentioned before, these animals don’t produce a lactose enzyme that can help to digest dairy.

Can kittens eat cheese? No. It’s not okay to feed a growing cat with products that can cause poor digestion and damage intestines.

What kind of cheese is the most appropriate for cats?

Is cow cheese safe for cats? Yes, but in small amounts.

Goat cheese is even a better option because it is more digestible.

Can cats have cream cheese like Philadelphia? Yes, they can. However, it is more caloric, so you can give just a small piece.

Swiss cheese is also a good choice. It has low amounts of lactose and high protein percentage.

Cheddar is also a low-lactose product so you can buy it for your fluffy.

Is low-lactose cheese good for cats? No. It still can cause serious digestive problems. So if you don’t want any tummy problems for your cat, stick to the diet and feed your cat with small portions.

In fact, use cheese as a cherry on the cake. It must be a special treat for your kitty. However, you should consult your vet before adding this product to the diet. Cats are very picky and capricious, so they can get used to such treats and ask for more. In some cases, cats refuse to eat anything else until their owner gives them some cheese.

So make sure your cat’s temper and health are ok, consult your doctor and choose a cheese that contains minimum lactose and calories.

Can cats eat non-dairy cheese?

The manufacturers already created cheese which is good for lactose-intolerant people. Is it good for cats? Not exactly. This product is rich in salt and fat. It can cause serious danger and hinder the kittens’ growth.

What kind of cheese is forbidden?

  • Blue cheese. Blue cheese contains mold. It is toxic to cats. Simply never feed your cat with it.
  • Brie. This cheese is made of raw milk. So it may contain such harmful ingredients as Salmonella and Listeria.
  • Camembert. It is also made of raw milk.
  • Mozzarella. Remember that soft cheeses are dangerous because they have a high percentage of lactose.

In fact, you can remember just one simple rule. The richer a cheese is, the more danger it brings to your cat’s health.

Are there any side effects of cats eating cheese?

Because pets do not possess significant amounts of lactase (the enzyme that breaks down lactose in milk), milk and other dairy-based products cause them diarrhea or other digestive upset.

ASPCA

Gas and diarrhea are not okay for your cat’s everyday life. Feed your pet with just one small piece of cheese. Then keep an eye on it. Make sure everything’s all right. If you notice any behavior changes or side effects mentioned above, call the doctor immediately.

In a word

It is not a problem to feed your cat with a small piece of cheese in case you chose the right kind of product.

Sometimes we all need some guilty-pleasure food that will make us feel happy. Our small friends are not an exception. They need some deliciousness to be in a good mood.

However, you are responsible for your cat’s health, so make sure you stick to all the rules described in the article.

Consult your vet, make a list of products that are okay for your cat’s health and develop a detailed schedule of additional feeding processes for your fluffy. Remember that portions are everything in this case. If you please your cat’s desire to eat a little bit more, you won’t do it any good.
